Tragic Collision in West Bengal: Goods Train Hits Kanchanjunga Express, Leaving 5 Dead and 25 Injured

In response to the tragic train accident in West Bengal between a goods train and the Kanchanjunga Express in New Jalpaiguri, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has swiftly mobilized medical teams and disaster response units to the site.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has assured the public through social media that rescue efforts are being conducted with utmost urgency, describing the situation as akin to a war footing.

The coordinated efforts between state and railway authorities underscore a determined response to the incident, emphasizing the priority placed on saving lives and managing the aftermath effectively.

On Monday morning in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri, several passengers sustained injuries when a goods train collided with the Kanchanjunga Express from behind.

Another senior railway official quoted as saying that according to preliminary investigations, the goods train overshot the signal and collided with the Kanchanjunga Express from behind.

Local media videos depicted a scene of chaos and urgency at the accident site, showing a dramatic collision between the Kanchanjunga Express and a goods train. One of the Kanchanjunga Express train cars was suspended in the air, while rescue workers and locals hurriedly responded to the pile-up.

“Five passengers have died, 20-25 injured in the accident. The situation is serious. The incident occurred when a goods train rammed into Kanchenjunga Express,” says Abhishek Roy, Additional SP of Darjeeling Police.
